Generative AI and the future of the world of work

As an experienced L&D professional, Ashley is often confronted with the fact that organizations are growing rapidly, pursuing ambitious goals and driving projects forward while struggling with never-ending to-do lists. The obvious solution often seems to be to hire additional staff to cope with the increasing workload.

This approach may seem sensible in the short term, but it overlooks the holistic view of what is required of the teams, how they work, what processes and systems exist and what strategic and financial needs the organization has. It also often misses the opportunity to analyze how existing teams work, where skills are lacking, what challenges they face and where there is potential for optimization and development. Instead, managers should aim to support their teams in working “smarter, not harder”.

The challenge and its transformation

While these challenges are not new, the proliferation of generative AI has fundamentally changed the way organizations interact with it. Ashley, who has been enthusiastically working with ChatGPT for over a year and has overseen the implementation of a solution at Blanchard, sees enormous potential in AI-based work tools to empower employees and managers in their roles. In contrast to the often feared threat to jobs from AI, she believes that tools like ChatGPT – used correctly – can lead to a significant increase in productivity, which is urgently needed in many teams.

An example of this:

Creating a job description is an important step in filling a new position. Although this process is not particularly complex, it requires a thorough understanding of the requirements of the role and sufficient time to translate these requirements into a precise job description. Often, however, this process is seen by managers as incidental, causing delays in the recruitment process and leaving HR without clear guidance.

Increased efficiency through AI tools

The use of AI tools such as ChatGPT Enterprise can speed up this process considerably. A manager can submit their thoughts to ChatGPT in natural language in just a few minutes, and the tool generates a professionally formulated job description. After a brief revision by the manager, this can then be forwarded to the HR department for final review. What previously took two hours can now be completed in around 20 minutes. If you multiply this time saving by the numerous day-to-day tasks (such as customer research, drafting presentations, preparing meeting agendas), the immense added value of generative AI for efficiency and the creation of free space for creative and strategic work becomes clear.

Generative AI – not just for large companies

One might assume that technologies such as generative AI are only accessible to large companies with extensive budgets. In reality, however, its broad availability means that it can be used by any company. By using it in a targeted way, teams can work more efficiently and drive their professional development at the same time. Here are some strategies on how to get started:

Explore the world of generative AI with curiosity and a clear understanding of the risks. There are a variety of tools on the market that are constantly evolving. Find out about industry trends and experiment with low-cost or free solutions.

Develop a tailored business case for your organization. Identify pain points, evaluate different solutions and secure investment for a pilot project.

Encourage commitment and ownership in your team. There are employees in your organization who are willing to support initiatives like generative AI, while others may be hesitant. Find your advocates and bring them together to lead the rollout across different departments. Celebrate successes and learn from setbacks to continuously foster innovation and progress.

Like computers and smartphones, generative AI is here to stay. How you embrace this technology and create a culture of development and growth will determine how you differentiate yourself from the competition and create long-term positive effects for your team and organization. Being open to the benefits and opportunities of generative AI will strengthen you and your organization.
